Barbara Rae-Venter, J.D., Ph.D., Attorney at Law

Dr. Rae-Venter specializes in due diligence opinions and in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in all aspects of biotechnology, and particularly in the areas of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, biopharmaceutics and agricultural biotechnology. Noteworthy patents cover recombinant protein expression in industrial strains of Bacilli for Gist-brocades N.V.(now DSM), antisense in plants for Calgene, LLC(now merged with Monsanto), and a method for treating diabetes for Research Triangle Pharmaceuticals(now merged with Transition Therapeutics).
Dr. Rae-Venter received her Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, San Diego in 1976, and her B.A. degree, cum laude in both psychology and biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 1972. She received her J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985. Prior to attending law school, Dr. Rae-Venter was an assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where she taught biochemistry and endocrinology in the medical school. Between 1976 and 1979 she was a postdoctoral fellow, and then a research scientist, at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. Her research related to studying the endocrinological determinants of breast cancer and cancers of the GI tract.
Dr. Rae-Venter also has substantial experience in the legal field. She was a partner in the Silicon Valley offices of Cooley Godward, LLP, Fish & Richardson, LLP, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges. In the latter two firms, she was in charge of the firms' biotechnology practices. She is a founder and member of the Board of Prosetta Corp ( and a member of the Dean's Council of the Division of Physical Sciences at UCSD. Dr. Rae-Venter is licensed to practice in Texas (inactive) and California, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.


David E. Bartlett, J.D., Attorney at Law

David E. Bartlett is a co-founder of several high-tech companies and of a venture capital practice investing in early stage technology companies. Mr. Bartlett co-founded Strategic Alliances Holdings LLC in 1998, a venture capital firm focusing on investments in emerging companies in the high technology sector, as well as the Silicon Valley-based wireless communications technology company Mobility Network Systems Inc. and the agent-based software company NetSage Corporation(recently merged with Finali Corporation). He is a founder and member of the Board of Prosetta Corp, a start-up biotechnology company.
Mr. Bartlett also has substantial experience in the legal field, specializing in corporate and securities law, strategic alliances and intellectual property. Mr. Bartlett was a Partner of the Silicon Valley law firm Cooley Godward LLP, where he was in charge of the technology practice in the Boulder office and was Co-Chair of the firm's Technology Practice Group. He is the author of numerous articles and other publications, including the Strategic Alliances Handbook and the Intellectual Property Handbook. Mr. Bartlett received a B.S., magna cum laude, from the University of Colorado in 1978, and a J.D., Outstanding Corporate Intern, from the University of Denver College of Law in 1984. Mr. Bartlett is licensed to practice in Colorado and California.


Elisabeth Sussex, J.D., Attorney at Law

Ms. Sussex is an intellectual property attorney specializing in the preparation and prosecution of patent, trademark, and copyright applications. Her areas of technology include computer hardware and software systems, networking systems, microchip technology, Internet infrastructure technology, telecommunications, optical device technology, and mechanical-electrical applications. She has acquired considerable industry experience in computer technology. During her tenure with several Fortune 50 companies Ms. Sussex has held various positions, including platform administrator for a global Unix platform comprising 6,300 remote systems; manager of a consultant team specializing in enterprise design and issue resolution; and technical consultant for systems design and implementation.
Ms. Sussex earned an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, cum laude, from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, and earned her J.D. from Wayne State Law School, Detroit, Michigan. Ms. Sussex is licensed to practice in Michigan and California and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
